LoRa Alliance – Introduction

The LoRa Alliance is an open, nonprofit association that has become one of the largest and fastest-growing alliances in the technology sector since its inception in 2015.  Its members closely collaborate and share experiences to promote and drive the success of the LoRaWAN standard as the leading open global standard for secure, carrier-grade IoT LPWAN connectivity. With the technical flexibility to address a broad range of IoT applications, both static and mobile, and a certification program to guarantee interoperability, LoRaWAN has already been deployed by major mobile network operators globally, with continuing wide expansion into 2020 and beyond.

The members of the LoRa Alliance believe that the time of the Internet of Things is now and that standardization and a strong, growing ecosystem is the only way drive volume deployments for low power wide area (LPWA) networks .These LPWA networks are projected to connect 50% of the predicted IoT volumes. The LoRa Alliance is standardizing LPWA with the LoRaWAN specification and has created a certification and compliance program to ensure interoperability. LoRaWAN end-devices will be able to be deployed in multiple networks and roam from one network to another irrespective of network infrastructure or operator.

Mission & Vision

Empowering sustainable IoT to maximize efficiency, improve quality of life and protect the planet’s resources.

To develop and promote LoRaWAN technology and its ecosystem to deliver massive IoT.

The primary goal of the LoRa Alliance is to standardize LPWAN and through standardization enable large scale volume IoT deployments. The LoRaWAN ecosystem will enable product availability, the LoRaWAN Certification Program will ensure interoperability and both are due to our members collaborating together on the LoRaWAN standard

Wi-Fi & LoRaWAN Deployment Synergies

Wi-Fi and LoRaWAN are two of the most adopted unlicensed technologies and together they address a large proportion of IoT use cases. The approaches for these technologies are on the disruption of private-public business models and also enabling participation in 5G success.

The Wi-Fi & LoRaWAN Deployment Synergies white paper intends to demonstrate how these two widely deployed IoT Connectivity technologies can be utilized in tandem to effectively support a vast array of use cases. This paper will summarize the strengths of each technology, their individual positions in the IoT ecosystem, state their complementary nature, the way that both technologies can be easily deployed simultaneously and provide testimonials.

LoRaWAN and NB-IoT : competitors or complementary

Low-Power Wide-Area (LPWA) technologies are serving a need in multiple IoT markets for devices that are low cost and sustain long battery life, and networks that are low cost, cover wide areas, and can support massive numbers of connections. There are several options for LPWA connectivity, but LoRaWAN and NB-IoT have shown the most momentum and will garner the largest share of the LPWA market in the coming years. This whitepaper will examine the two technologies for their similarities and differences. It will transition to a discussion of LoRaWAN use in several vertical markets, highlighting LoRaWAN’s unique benefits. The whitepaper will conclude with the potential use cases where both LoRaWAN and NB-IoT will operate together to provide the greatest value for customers.
